What is a Dental Cleaning & Exam?

A dental cleaning and oral exam is a preventive treatment that removes plaque, tartar, and stains while checking for signs of cavities, gum disease, or other dental issues. Even if you brush and floss daily, professional teeth cleanings are essential to maintaining healthy gums and a bright smile.

Why Are Dental Cleanings Important?

  • Prevents Cavities & Tooth Decay – Plaque buildup leads to enamel erosion, which causes cavities. A cleaning removes it before damage occurs.

  • Protects Against Gum Disease – Early-stage gingivitis is reversible with proper cleanings and oral care.

  • Keeps Your Breath Fresh – Tartar buildup and bacteria cause bad breath (halitosis). A professional cleaning eliminates odor-causing bacteria.

  • Brightens Your Smile – Stubborn stains from coffee, tea, and wine? A dental polishing leaves your teeth looking whiter.

  • Saves You Money – Preventive care helps avoid expensive procedures like root canals and dental crowns later on.

If you’re looking for gentle dental cleanings near you, our skilled Brooklyn and Manhattan dentists are here to help!

How Your Dental Cleaning & Exam Works

1

Pre-Appointment Prep

Our office is always available in case you want to give us a call and chat. But for those that dread that initial conversation with the doctor’s office, you're in luck.

We’ll send you text / email reminders ahead of your appointment. If you need to reschedule, have a question, or simply want to chat - you can just reply directly there.

If you’re a new patient, you’ll be able to complete your intake forms digitally and submit your insurance information.

2

Your Visit

You’ll meet Dr. Marina Kuznetsov or Dr. Dmitriy Kuznetsov (aka Dr. K!). They’ll review your dental history, discuss any concerns, and perform a visual examination of your teeth and gums. Digital X-rays may be taken if necessary to check for hidden issues.

The doctor / hygienist will then:
✔️ Remove plaque and tartar buildup using special dental tools
✔️ Polish your teeth to remove surface stains
✔️ Floss between your teeth (because let’s be real, we know some of you skip this!)

3

Treatment Plan Review

Dr. K will conduct a final oral health check and go over any recommendations. If needed, we’ll discuss next steps for treatment, including fillings, fluoride treatments, or periodontal care.

Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next dental checkup—so you don’t have to worry about forgetting!

  • Yes! Even if you brush and floss like a champ, plaque and tartar still build up in places you can’t reach. A professional dental cleaning helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath—plus, it keeps your teeth looking fresh.

  • Nope! Most people just feel a little tickling or scraping. If your gums are sensitive, let us know, and we’ll be extra gentle. But hey, if you can survive biting into a hot pizza too soon, you can handle this.

  • Think of plaque like that one friend who overstays their welcome. Leave it too long, and it turns into hardened tartar, leading to cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Plus, bad breath—because no one wants that.

  • Yes! But if you got a fluoride treatment, hold off for 30 minutes—otherwise, you’re just washing away the good stuff. (If you were planning on eating ice cream right after… maybe rethink that anyway.)

  • No! Bleeding gums are usually a sign of gingivitis (early-stage gum disease), meaning you actually need to floss more—not less. Stick with it, and the bleeding should improve in a few weeks. If not, come see us.

  • Yes. And we know when you don’t. (We’re basically dental detectives.) Skipping flossing lets plaque build up between your teeth, leading to cavities, bad breath, and gum disease. It takes 30 seconds—just do it!

  • That’s us measuring the health of your gums. Lower numbers (1s and 2s) mean healthy gums. Higher numbers (4s and 5s) mean there’s inflammation or early gum disease. It’s like a progress report—but for your mouth.

  • Not necessarily. We only take dental X-rays when needed to check for hidden cavities, bone loss, or other issues. Plus, modern digital X-rays use way less radiation than the old-school kind.

  • Most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings per year—which means there’s no reason to skip! If you’re not sure about your coverage, we can check for you.

  • Easy! Call our Brooklyn (Brighton Beach) or Manhattan (Gramercy) office, or book online. We even have same-day and weekend appointments available.
